Over the past few weeks, we’ve been talking about crafting goals with feelings. In this blog post, Michelle shares with us a statement she used to transform her life.
A few years ago, I wrote down a statement based on how I wanted to feel for the foreseeable future. It was:
“I am lighter, freer, and adventurous.”
I used that statement as a filter for the activities and experiences I wanted to have that year. And I continued to use that statement every year until very recently.
For me, feeling lighter, freer, and adventurous took shape in a variety of ways. Here are a few examples:
Lighter
I reduced the amount of clutter in my home by donating clothing that no longer fit me or no longer brought me joy.
I stopped watching TV shows and movies that didn’t make me laugh, inspire me, or motivate me.
I surrounded myself with people who focused on the positive more than the negative, and made me smile.
Freer
On a not-so-chilly winter afternoon, I asked two girlfriends of mine to go play on a playground with me, and we had a blast!
I examined the labels and agreements handed down to me and chose which ones I wanted to keep (e.g., wearing a bra with underwire versus wireless).
I left an unhappy marriage and sold the house we once shared.
Adventurous
I took class and researched how to go backpacking. I then bought all of the gear and planned my first trip. Then, I did it: I hiked about 20 miles all by myself in the Lewis Fork Wilderness in Virginia — solo
I went on a trip to the Finger Lakes in upstate New York all by myself for a week. And, It was amazing!
I recently bought a travel trailer and have plans to visit national and state parks, forests, and bureau of land management green spaces.
That last bullet leads me to this…
It took me a few years to feel like I fulfilled that last statement, and with 2020 behind me, I felt like a new goal was in order. My statement for 2021 (and hopefully beyond) is:
“I feel AWESTRUCK 🔷 RESPLENDENT 🔷 CONTENTMENT.”
It might be a tall order to fill, and yet, I believe it’s totally possible.
How do you want to feel this year and beyond? What sort of feeling goal might you craft for yourself to help you achieve the end result you want?
