Letting go of the vision you’ve most likely held so deeply since you were a child is very difficult when faced with infertility. Typically, you go into trying to get pregnant with the idea that it will match what is portrayed in the movies. It’s not until you experience heartache month after month, possibly even year after year that you truly understand what it means to let go.

It’s a process, one you fight with all your might until you’re forced to move on to the next phase of your journey. This holding on to what you want something to be, rather than accepting the reality in front of you creates friction. That friction perpetuates the emotions you’re experiencing through your thoughts and feelings thereby negatively impacting the body and the psyche. The struggle is real. Until you can release your tight grasp on that vision, you will continue to feel the ripple effects throughout all areas of your life.

How can you move forward?

Practice non-attachment or aparigraha by releasing your tight grasp over any and all visions. Non-attachment asks you to live in the present moment, not in the past or the future. It encourages you to accept the reality right in front of you, to be an active participant in this moment, the next moment, and the moment after that. It asks you to embrace what comes your way without pushing, gripping, or holding tightly onto what you want something to be.

Non-attachment doesn’t mean you can’t have a vision at all. It just means when you have a dream, or vision of how you’d like to something to come into existence, that you follow this course of action:

  1. Let your desire be known

  2. Let go of attachment to the precise steps you’ll take to get there (a rough idea is fine)

  3. Enjoy the journey from where you are to where you eventually arrive

  4. Be open to how everything unfolds

  5. Accept that where you eventually land may not look exactly like you had hoped

  6. Practice gratitude along the way

How might you weave the practice of non-attachment into your day-to-day? Give it a try for the next two weeks and see how things hopefully shift in a positive direction for you.
