How do you breathe? Do you think about it? Do you ever pause to notice what happens when the breath comes in? And then what happens when it goes out? The 4th limb is arguably the “easiest” of the 8-limbed path - Pranayama - aka breathing. Typically we neglect the breath until it feels strained or absent. We all breathe automatically, it’s autonomic. We don’t have to think to breathe, but there are ways of breathing that are better than others for us physiologically.

I remember the first time I was introduced to yoga (not just the physical practice we’re all too familiar with here in the West). I had just completed three rounds of timed intercourse with injections — but none of them took. I was devastated, and I was in the midst of trying to decide what to do next. So, I signed up for a yoga retreat in the mountains. It was a much-needed respite from the overwhelming grief, frustration, and anxiety I had been experiencing for quite some time.

Breathing is the one thing we can live without for the shortest period of time. It’s automatic, and it’s rarely something we think about. How’s your breathing? Once we start thinking about our breath we have a tendency to start shaping it and controlling it. Did you do that just now?

Years ago, while we were in the crux of infertility treatments, I said to my husband, “with technology today, they can get anyone pregnant.” I know I said it out loud, and I really wanted to believe it, but deep down, I had so much fear. I feared that we would be that couple that they couldn’t get pregnant.

How to Choose a Space
Choose a quiet and ideally secluded space for your weekly practice. Consider all of the areas of your home. Do you have a spare bedroom or loft area? Or maybe your bedroom is large enough to set up a permanent self-care area just for you. Pick one that feels the most inviting to you.
